Biography by Jean-Jacques Hanine Roussel, translated from the Italian by Samuel Chase with Teresa Brentegani, Albert and Adriana Miner
About the Book
Giulietta Simionato, the great Italian mezzo-soprano, was indeed a real life Cinderella long before she performed the role in Rossini's opera. Her talents were overlooked for much too long, and when they were properly showcased proved amazingly resplendent and dependable. Simionato's voice was unique, and not only for the control which enabled her to produce right notes and styles: she imbued each of her roles with a distinct personality. Unique above all was Giulietta's dedication to her art. Her considerable personal charm could only have been revealed during lulls in her almost continuous artistic activity. As her colleagues knew her in real life, readers of this book will know her by means of glimpses and telling details, and will find her sincere, loyal, modest and kind. This book in meant to celebrate Giulietta Simionato's achievement – to celebrate her very existence in our midst – but it might be something more.
Number four in Baskervilles Great Voices Series, the volume contains a CD with choice recordings of Simionato. In addition, there are 40 pages of photographs and a discography.
