After Franco Corelli's unfortunate death, this biography has been completely rewritten, revised, and expanded. Unrivalled in his time as Caruso was before him, Corelli lived an ascetic life away from the theatre, pushing himself relentlessly to gain complete mastery of his voice, reaching new frontiers of technical virtuosity. Ms. Boagno clears up the mysteries and misunderstandings that arose throughout Corelli's career, revealing much about the man along the way. Corelli is a frank celebration of a voice that defined a period of operatic history, a voice that will always be an inspiration to people who love singing - and of a man who lived his life for art, whose example is another important aspect of his legacy.

The ninth title in Baskerville's Great Voices Series, George London: Of Gods and Demons is a biography of the late George London, the great bass-baritone of the 20th century, written by his wife, Nora London. George London combined a great voice, superb musicianship, and a commanding stage presence as few singers ever have. This new biography chronicles the life of a talented, driven man who fell in love with opera as a boy, and achieved greatness in America and all over the world. Yet the book does not shy away from the difficulties of his youth, the troubles with his voice that ended his singing career prematurely, nor his tragic last years.

Brodsky by Ludmila Shtern (Leaving Leningrad, Brandeis Univ. Press, 2001) is the first memoir of life with Joseph Brodsky. Shtern was a family friend of Brodsky and part of the circle of friends to whom Brodsky read his first poems. Shtern's memoir can thus be called, without exaggeration, "Russian literary history in the making."
The book is illustrated with pictures of Brodsky and his friends and includes original poetry that has not been translated into English before.

Like other books in our Opera series, Marilyn Horne: The Song Continues memorializes a great singer's achievements-in particular, Marilyn Horne's range of characterization (extensive, as our photos will testify), and her stylistic fluency in operas by composers as different as Handel and Leoncavallo, Rossini and Verdi, Vivaldi and Berg (as revealed by her discography and the attached CD); finally, her life story shows us the artist and teacher, mother and friend, in words that are frequently generous, but sometimes harsh, in keeping with the unabashed honesty that is one of her outstanding personal qualities.
